La Mère Brazier

Not once but twice did we manage to go to a fabulous restaurant. The first one was of course the fabulous Jeremy Galvier and the second one was on Monday for lunch called ‘La Mère Brazier‘. We were lead to our table in one of the rooms downstairs, richly decorated and already inviting from the settings.

We started with a glass of champagne and I devoured the amuse gueule (fabulous pâté in a crust) while for Susi we had to explain the maitre d’ her food preferences. I was more than impressed when he asked in detail what she would eat and what not to get it completely right. In no time she had a buttery, rich and oh so lovely brioche in front of her with a savory creamy sauce (can’t say what it was but worked great with the brioche).

There were of course two kinds of butter as well as all kinds of different breads to eat including very small baguette. Susi loved them because they consisted almost entirely of crust.

The second amuse gueule was fois gras in the shape of an apple with line foam (I think) for me and something green with peas for Susi. The small apple was amazing! So rich and creamy and overall just amazing.

Then we finally started with the meal. Susi had a first course of eggs and mushrooms including truffles. Just look at the presentation, doesn’t it appear like a still life?

I had again fois gras, this time with artichoke. One pan seared piece and a pâté. Delicious again and the artichoke really went well with both versions of the fois.

As a main dish my friend had all kinds of vegetables, again presented like a painting while I ate mousseline de brochet with lobster. The mousseline is some kind of national dish for Lyon so I absolutely had to try it.

It was creamy and delicious and had soft texture while the lobster had a nice bite to it. Perfectly paired and well seasoned. Then the two course meal was over or so we thought. But far from it we now got another amuse gueule, a Madeleine which is usually boring and was here to die for. Rich and buttery with a nice crust that must have come from sugar dusting the form, it came with ice cream (can’t remember what exactly, maybe sour cream).

Next course was the main dessert, a rhubarb egg-white creation (which to be honest looked better than it tasted) and an absolutely yummy exotic fruit mix with thin crusted cookies and coconut sorbet. Since Susi didn’t finish it I was allowed to polish it off.

With the coffee we were also served petit fours (lemon meringue cake and intense chocolate coffee pralines) and got some treats from the candy cart. Excellent chocolate from Bernachon and orange flavored marshmallow.

As you can image we were more than happy when we left. The restaurant was an experience in itself, service was impeccable and very courteous and the food just outstanding. Definitely worth a trip to Lyon. Yours, Pollybert
