The south of Iceland

We spent the morning driving all the way to the Glacier Lagoon Jökulsárlón. But once we had seen it we turned around again and headed back to Reykjavik.  But not before we had a short stop next to a lava field. In the late 1700s a volcano erupted and covered about 2500km² of Icelandic soil. The ensuing ash cloud hung over Europe for two years and had a big political impact.

We had three more stops on the way back to Reykjavik. One in the village of Vik which has a pretty black lava beach and a quaint church on top of a hill. And two more waterfalls. Iceland really has waterfalls in abundance. Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss,  with the latter one offering the chance to walk behind a waterfall. That was a new and also a very wet experience. Good to know: always start from the right; on the left side the stones are very slippery on the way down.

A day like this exhausts you. Not just from the long hours but mostly from all the new impressions throughout the day. What a start to our Icelandic adventure. Yours, Pollybert
