Breakfast at StadtAllee

StadtAllee, in one of the many inner courtyards of the Mariahilfer Strasse, is far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the shopping street to let you relax for a while. This was not the reason though why we went there for breakfast on a recent Saturday. It has been newly opened and I wanted to see if it was worth visiting. In short, no.

The restaurant has an open look already from the outside with a large window front and an open kitchen concept inside. It all looks pleasant enough, except that the tables are too close together. My dislike has nothing to do with the pandemic, but rather a wish for privacy. And of course during a pandemic I don’t want people I do not know sitting super close to me. Especially in a restaurant that only glanced at my ‘Green Pass’ and that because I showed it, but never even asked my friend for his.

At least at 9am the place was still quiet and there was no one in the same room with us for the next 30 minutes, except for the many waiters.

After eating Eggs Benedict forever as my favorite breakfast dish, I have gone off them now. It’s just such a hyped dish at the moment and at most restaurants they are not great. So why should I let a mediocre restaurants ruin my favorite dish? I therefore ordered Huevos Rancheros while my friend got the Eggs Benedict with ham.

My dish either came directly from the microwave or it stood for a some time underneath the heat lamp in the kitchen. The left egg got cooked through and also the right one showed signs of long heat exposure. The beans had unfortunately a rather unappealing color but tasted okay. Overall not a winner though. Neither optical nor taste wise.

The Eggs Benedict looked a lot better. Served on a muffin they come in three different versions, with ham, spinach, or smoked salmon. My friend got the ham version and complained right away that it was bacon. Which was not correct. It was really ham, just fried like bacon. The eggs looked good to me, they were just a tad too well done and therefore not runny inside. Which was exactly what was missing to make it a good combination with the sauce Hollandaise. Another miss!

StadtAllee looks nice enough to stop for coffee or a drink when you are out shopping. I don’t believe it’s worth it though to come especially for breakfast. All in all this is just another place in Vienna, that looks stylish and lacks substance. Yours, Pollybert
