Heu & Gabel

Ash Wednesday is, according to the Catholic Church, a day of fasting. Not that I care so much what the Church wants, but the variety of herring dishes is amazing. Heu & Gabel was the only restaurant in the area, actually at the Meidlinger Markt, which offered this traditional fare and so we decided to give it a try. The large market stall comes divided in a shopping and a dining area.

We ordered the Heringsschmaus, which consists usually of three kinds of herring salad. Due to popularity (and the lack of other restaurants in the area serving it), only two varieties were still available. We therefore also got some mussels in tomato sauce. The owner brought also two fish spreads, one with salmon and one with trout, for us to try. It was going to be a feast despite it being a rather high fasting day.

The two spreads were absolutely delicious. My friend raved especially about the salmon one, but both were tasty. The bowl of mussels added a warm dish to our fasting bounty, but wasn’t actually needed. The herring salads, one with curry and the other with red beets, had a good ratio of fish and vegetables. I missed the typical herring salad with beans and pickles. But overall, this was exactly what I wanted on that day. Nice service and lovely food. Yours, Pollybert
