Restaurant Orientable

The 18th district of Vienna has gotten a gem with the restaurant Orientable. Right in the middle of a busy shopping street this new restaurant opened its doors and beckons locals to take a closer look. My friends had already paid a visit shortly after Orientable’s opening and it got rave reviews from them. So of course I had to see for myself what the hype was all about.

We decided on an array of starters and forwent any main courses. I am big into sharing and, although we had one pescetarian with us, it was easy to do. There was only one meat dish, highly recommended by the one who didn’t eat meat, which was Humus Bil Lahma. Humus with grilled lamb meat sounded delicious, but there was much that could go wrong here. Nothing did though, the humus was creamy, the meat juicy and so tender, all in all a dish you want to dive in.

Another dish I immensely enjoyed was Marak Bamia aka okra in tomato sauce. Okra is difficult vegetable. Disliked by many, enjoyed by just a few and only if done right. At Orientable it was a wonderful dish. The okra perfectly cooked and slimy at all, the seasoning of the tomato sauce dreamy. Thoroughly enjoyable!

Another warm dish was Sambusak, similar to samosa, a fried pastry with cheese filling. Personally I found these rather bland and without the accompanying salad quite dry.

Tabulla, or as I know it Tabbouleh, was okay. Not really something I would order here again, there was no wow effect at all. It was good to have something fresh on the table, but it didn’t elevate the meal.

Something I hadn’t eaten before was Mutabal, a roasted eggplant spread with tahini. Maybe it was the smoky flavor, or maybe it was something else. Mutabal is an acquired taste and I am not there yet. My friends liked it though, so it was probably delicious.

Last but not least we had also ordered Muhammara, a spicy spread made of red peppers and walnuts. That one I knew and enjoyed, especially with the warm Lavash bread. The bread was delicious and ideal to scoop up all the spreads and great sauces.

What a great addition Orientable is to the 18th district! I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here. Service was excellent and very friendly. I love it when the waiter tells you that you probably ordered enough, and right he was! Definitely will come back to this one! Yours, Pollybert
