Arriving at Meinklang Hofladen, shortly before 9am on a Saturday morning, I was happy to notice that there were a couple of tables available. We entered through the bakery and the staff had already been busy. Fresh bread and other baked goodies were on display and the air smelled heavenly. I couldn’t wait to try one of these pastries.
The charm of this small restaurant/shop was not lost on me. Inside the dining area everything is made of light wood and oozes natural flair. Above the bar seating dried flowers are hanging and the arrangement has a wholesome appeal. Which fits with the concept since Meinklang is a farm not far from Vienna and its produce is sold in the shop as well as used in the kitchen.
The breakfast menu is short and to the point, there is nothing fancy here. Just straightforward dishes where you recognize each ingredient. My friend ordered scrambling eggs with Mangalica bacon, fresh herbs, and bread. He tried to get them fried, but combinations cannot be changed. In hindsight this would have been better, because this is not how three eggs look like.
There was only a little bit of bacon on the plate, but it appeared to be enough since it was very intense. The eggs lacked any seasoning and were almost tasteless, but together with the bacon it worked fine. The bread was definitely the star of this dish! Soft, nice crust, and very tasty!
I was more adventurous and ordered two poached eggs in mountain cheese sauce with potatoes and herbs. The eggs had been poached to perfection. They were still soft, but not runny at all. The cheese sauce on the other hand had a soupy consistency, and while it was delicious I could not have vouched for any cheese in it. The baby potatoes inside had a still a bite to it and I would have loved them a tad more cooked. Overall though this was an interesting dish and with the lovely bread for dipping I was thoroughly enjoying it.
I would have loved to try the red beet carpaccio or the fried liver sausage, but for that you need a friend to share. And my friend is not into that at all! I managed to convince him though to share a Pastel de Nata with me, which was just the right amount of sweet gooeyness to close the meal. While it was nice enough, it lacked the distinct color on top and the bottom had no crunch. A nice enough custard tart, but not a Pastel de Nata in my opinion.
Meinklang Hofladen takes no reservations for breakfast, so either come early or be prepared to wait. At 9:25 every table including the bar seats were occupied and some customers even took their breakfast on the terrace. That might be nice in warmer weather, but that’s not something I enjoy when it is colder. Service was friendly, though quite busy. Best of all is the little shop/bakery for some treats to take home. Yours, Pollybert
