Who doesn’t like a party? Especially if it is happening in a unique location. Kunstschatzi is the feels like the brain child of a art history nerd and a party girl. But whoever thought of it is a genius, because this event is definitely a success. Once a month the Kuppelsaal (dome hall) in the Kunsthistorische Museum in Vienna (KHM for locals) features as party location.
To get tickets it takes a lot of patience and perseverance. The moment the tickets went online the system crashed and I lost my connection. A minute later it was sold out. Luckily a week later more tickets went online and my friend managed to snag some. So we set out on this December evening to sample the Christmas market between the two museums before heading inside to get our culture fix for the month.
The KHM was ready for the onslaught of party people and pulled out all stops. Not that this is necessary since the building itself is already more than impressive. Maybe it was the Christmas season or maybe the theme of the evening ‘You’re so golden’ that made some people show up in formal attire.
The Christmas decoration was vying for attention with the sculptures and radiated pure party bliss.
The dome hall had been completely transformed in a bar and dance area with the crowd getting larger by the minute and Depeche Mode filling up the dance floor. Disco balls shimmered and fancy drinks helped to get in the party mood.
Throughout the museum there were four different guided tours, all under the ‘Golden’ theme. Every thirty minutes they would start, most in German but some in English, from 7:30 to 10:30pm. We tagged along and enjoyed the ‘Golden Girls, Golden Guys’ tour immensely. Who would have thought that already in the renaissance ‘porn’ was available? One just needs to know where to look for the ‘penetration’. IYKYK as do I now thanks to our very funny guide.
I certainly enjoyed this evening and would love to come again. Definitely a reason to get a season ticket for the museum, although it doesn’t help with the access to Kunstschatzi.
The dome hall was in full dance swing when we left. As responsible adults none of us could allow for a hangover the next day.
When we left a few stragglers were coming up the main stairs and joined the revelers until the museum closed its doors.
The Christmas market had already closed for the evening and only Maria Theresia still held court. The next Kunstschatzi event will be on January 21st, a date to remember. Yours, Pollybert
