Breakfast at Speisen ohne Grenzen

Speisen ohne Grenzen means food without borders, which sounds like a great concept if you enjoy a good meal. This restaurant has chefs from all over the world and they all cook their own cuisine. After having been forced to leave their home, they found a new place in Vienna and are now introducing the Viennese to the local dishes. Sounds like traveling for the belly without leaving the confines of Vienna. An amazing idea when you can’t get away on vacation.

The restaurant usually opens in the late afternoon for dinner service, but on Saturday it also offers breakfast. When we arrived at 9am the restaurant was still empty except for us. No reservations are necessary this early in the morning.

The menu of Speisen ohne  Grenze is quite short for breakfast. There are three kinds of Naan Toast from Somalia, Afghanistan, and Kosovo. Then there is some kind of a tomato omelette from Afghanistan and for the not so faint of heart a lamb liver dish from Somalia. Guess what I ordered?

Of course I had to get the lamb liver! This sounded so interesting and very different from anything else we would eat at breakfast that I just had to go for it. The menu promised a freshly roasted lamb liver with chili, red onions, coriander, and tomatoes with a piece of pita bread. And this is exactly what arrived.

The liver was perfectly roasted, still juicy and very nicely seasoned. There was not a lot of chili, but enough to get me going in the morning. The addition of tomatoes, red onion slices, and coriander provided a fresh flavor, otherwise there would have been too much oil. The pita bread was soft and from that morning. Overall a very interesting dish, I am just not sure if I could eat it every day. But I noticed that I didn’t need anything else until late afternoon that day.

My friend ordered the toasted Naan bread Kosovo style. It was filled with Sucuk, a sausage made with beef and lamb, an omelette, yogurt sauce, black olives, and fresh vegetables.

The fresh vegetables were maybe a little bit boring, but for a meat eater this was just enough healthy option. I didn’t try the sandwich, but heard only the best about it. My friend liked that there was enough filling and it was well seasoned. So this was a winner!

The restaurant was not much fuller when we left. All in all two other tables were occupied.

It is a shame that not more people frequent Speisen ohne Grenzen, since the kitchen definitely knows what it’s doing. The seasoning was great and everything tasted fresh and recently cooked. I really learned to appreciate this on my breakfast explorations through the city. So many places offer convenience food, plated up nicely and charged at a premium. Speisen ohne Grenzen cooks with love and a fine hand. This is a place I want to see for dinner as well in any case a restaurant I will come back to. Yours, Pollybert
