Breakfast at Café Falk

The 22nd district is a far cry from my usual radius of operandi. But one has to stay flexible so recently I made a reservation for Café Falk and ventured out into the wide world. Okay, maybe not so wide but this area of Vienna is totally new to me.

As it turned out, a reservation was totally not necessary for this time of the day. There was only one seat at the bar occupied and a bit later someone sat down on the table behind us and ordered a beer. Such is life on the outskirts of Vienna.

Instead of beer I opted for coffee and a toasted dark bread with omelette, pumpkin seed oil, and pumpkin seeds. It came recommended by the chef according to the menu. I can’t be sure why it warranted a recommendation, but it wasn’t half bad. The omelette was hot and there was enough oil on top to provide some taste without overwhelming everything. Pumpkin seed oil can be fickle when used too generously. In this case it was just right and the seeds on top delivered a nice crunch. Perfectly seasoned and all in all a satisfying breakfast.

My friend friend chose scrambled eggs with bacon and onions, which came rich garnished. The garnish consisted of pickled pearl onions and a pickled sweet chili pepper. He seemed quite happy with the portion, it definitely looked as if three eggs had wandered into this dish. It’s best though to use the garnish sparingly throughout the meal and not eat it all at one. I guess it was quite sour after all. Overall he looked happy with his meal.

Café Falk has no pretensions whatsoever and serves a breakfast with no frippery. Here you get good and honest food. Which is a welcome change from all the other places I went for breakfast in the last couple of month. It is also far enough away from the city that the prices here are still reasonable. But to be honest, I am not sure if it will draw me back. I am too spoiled and love a fancy breakfast. And fancy is not a word I would use in regards to Café Falk. Yours, Pollybert
