Caen has many lovely restaurants and on our first evening we already got lucky. The second night we were in town we searched for a place near the castle. Within easy walking distance we found a pedestrian zone with many restaurants. The whole area was enchanting and we ended up in the prettiest restaurant, Le P’tit B.

Le P’tit B, at least that’s the name on the sunroof, so I am not sure where Horace is coming from, had an interesting menu and good enough online reviews for us to settle on it. As it’s the best deal in France both of us ordered the three course menu. It started with a home-made muffin with a little dot of herb cream on top. A nice touch to serve something home made at the start, but I would have been just happy with baguette and butter as well.

Our first course was a French beef roll with white cabbage and mint. A slice of raw beef was filled with marinated cabbage salad and mint. The meat was a bit thicker than your standard carpaccio, but could be cut without troubles. It had great fresh summer flavor and was welcome on this lovely summer evening. Lovely starter!

As a main course my friend chose the fish, which was pollack with ratatouille, olive oil, and orange sauce. The ratatouille was well hidden underneath the fish and everything was doused in orange sauce. I heard no complaints, so it must have been nice enough.

My duck breast with snow peas and chanterelle on the other hand was a bit boring. Especially the duck could have used some seasoning. The veggies were lovely, very fresh and of great quality. Isn’t interesting to note that there was not one carbohydrate side dish with the main courses?

We decided to share the desserts as two sounded just so enticing and we couldn’t decide. We therefore got a pistachio eclair with raspberries and an apricot tartelette with olive oil ice cream. As nice as the eclair looked, there was something seriously wrong with eclair. I am sure the chef noticed it as well, but served it anyways. At least the pistachio cream and the raspberries were delicious.

The apricot tartelette with olive oil ice cream was a complete hit. The cream underneath the apricots was infused with thyme, which worked amazingly well with the apricots and the olive oil ice cream. Altogether a really lovely dish!

Service was friendly and tables were added on, whenever someone asked for one. The house wine tasted good enough and worked with the meal. After paying the bill we got a rather large petit four, which had the same form as the amuse gueule. This time though it was some kind of chocolate muffin with a dollop of whipped cream. It could not compete with the apricot tartelette though. Le P’tit B is definitely a restaurant I would go back to if I am in the area. Yours, Pollybert
