Mari’s Metcha Matcha

When I arrived at Mari’s Metcha Matcha my table was still occupied and I had to wait a bit. Not a problem here since Metcha Matcha also includes a small shop with Japanese earthenware . Not that I wanted buy anything, but this reminded me a lot of Japan where I have seen similar concepts. Even the simple seating looked familiar. Just the lighting was a bit dark for the front tables as you can see from the pictures.

We all ordered a Bento and therefore did not need a starter. I decided on Yakiniku Teisyoku, which was ginger fried pork belly with kimchi and an egg. Three little Japanese tapas of the day, plus rice, and Miso soup rounded out the meal. I started with the thinly sliced pork belly and the kimchi. The soup had a cover and would stay hot for a while longer.

The pork had a nice taste, not a lot of ginger in my opinion, but still nice. Together with the kimchi and the rice it was a delicious combination. The egg looked a bit long in the tooth, I think it had been waiting around for a bit. The appetizer between the two covered bowls was a warm dish with beef and potatoes. It tasted okay, but was nothing special.

The shrimps dish was fishy, I just didn’t really like the shrimps. There was some kind of liquid or sauce on it, which I couldn’t assign. It left a weird taste in my mouth.

The third tapas on top was a lukewarm salad with carrots, onions, maybe leeks, and seaweed as well as ginger on top. The salad had a bland taste and was definitely the least interesting thing on my board.

My friends ordered a Bento, which came recommended by the chef. It included soba noodles with fried tofu, five different sushi, a vegetable croquette, and the same quite bland carrot seaweed salad as I had.

Both my friends were impressed with the many different plates and bowls and that each dish had its own distinct taste. The soba noodles were a hit, as were the five sushi pieces. The vegetable croquette got mixed reviews as well as the carrot seaweed salad.

Overall Mari’s Metcha Matcha delighted us. Me, because I have just been to Japan and it certainly is very authentic, and my friends because they enjoyed their food. We even found a birthday gift before we left. The restaurant offers an exciting dining experience without the need to break the bank. Unanimously we said we would be back. What a little gem! Yours, Pollybert
