Books

This summer will be different by Carley Fortune: What a joyride this book was. Lucy and Felix hit it off right away without knowing anything about each other. Of course in the light of the next day everything looks different, even more so in the light of the next couple of years. The love story is beautiful and relatable, best of all is the setting on Prince Edward Island. Makes you want to go there and eat your weight in oysters. Lovely book!

Wolves of Winter by Dan Jones: It appears as if I am in a deep history phase, especially the 14th century since three of the fours books in this post are set during that time. Wolves of Winter is the second book in the Essex Dogs trilogy from Dan Jones. After the battle of Crécy the book picks up the thread again and tells us the story of the remaining Essex Dogs. It ends in front of Calais and the siege of said city, which took time and effort on behalf of Edward III. and his main. But it also sheds light on the fate of the inhabitants of Calais and their struggle. A bit too vivid for my taste in these trying time, but well written.  Interesting subject!

The Greatest Knight by Elizabeth Chadwick: Book two in the series about the family of William Marshal. The first one was about his father, second and third about the eponym of the series. The fourth son of the king’s marshal, hence the name, made his way in the chivalry world with loyalty and integrity. Serving five kings during his lifetime he managed to snag a rich heiress for his steadfastness. ‘The Greatest Knight’ tells about his life during the first three kings and how he managed to work his way up. I can’t wait to start the next one in the series.

The Lady of the Loch by Elena Collins: I had high hopes for this novel. The dual timeline, part historical novel – part chick lit, really spoke to me. Unfortunately the chick lit part fell flat. It was not so much the ghost which disturbed me, but the bad writing. There was a lot of inner monologue, quite repetitive at times, and a really unrealistic love story. Actually make that two love stories, since the main characters of the the chick lit part were twins. The historical novel was actually quite interesting, I quite liked that the heroine was just a servant. That was a new approach, also the writing was a lot better for these chapters of the book.
