Sifnos is a beautiful beach not far from Athens with many sandy beaches. Some might be small, others are long stretches. Most of them have a least a little bit of natural shade, because quite a lot did not have beach sets for rent. Come to think of it, we didn’t rent once during our week on Sifnos. The first day on Vathi we saw an overpriced possibility and decided to spend the money rather on food. That’s how we ended up on the sand. It was excellent! Yours, Pollybert
1.) Vathi beach: a narrow, but long, sandy beach. I couldn’t detect a lot of difference between low and high tide. The restaurant Deep Blue right next to the street to the bus station was not good at all, the restaurant Okeanida next door was full on the other hand.
On the left side of the beach there was some natural shade rather at the end of the beach, where we put down our towels. We passed one resort with lounge sets, not sure if you can rent there. There was one other place to rent on the left side, but that was 30,- Euro per set. At the far end to the left was neither shower nor changing stall.
On the right side coming from the bus, all the way to the right after the little church, there’s another small beach. It’s small, because a restaurant is taking up most of the space under the trees. There’s still one large tree left, where everyone crowded together to get out of the sun. This beach is quite protected from the wind, which happens often in the Cycladic area. Despite a strong wind, the flag on top of the church was standing proudly, at the beach we noticed nothing.
There’s also a second restaurant from Sifnos Studios on that beach, where we had a delicious late lunch. The beach on the right is also sandy with some stones at water level, which makes is difficult to get in and out. But it was manageable without a problem and there is no need for shoes. A changing stall was available, but no shower.
2.) Glyfo beach: you need to take the bus to Faros beach and then keep to the right. Walk through the little village and head directly to Glyfo beach. Here you will find lots of natural shade from the many trees. We bought some lunch at a small bakery in Faros, the sandwiches were very tasty and beautifully wrapped. Glyfo beach has a shower and a changing stall.
3.) Platis Gialos: this is a very long and sandy beach and by far the busiest beach we have been. It is also the only beach with two bus stops. There is a bit of natural shade, but every little bit of shade was occupied under the trees at 11:30. There are a couple of different places selling loungers and umbrella sets. But we found a place with umbrellas, but no loungers for free. It’s more to the end of the beach, closer to the second bus stop. Lots of restaurants and a small super market. There is a shower and a changing stall.
4.) Fassolou beach: also a beach next to Faros, this time on the left hand side. A quick five minutes walk from the bus stop brings you to this smaller beach. It is sandy with a couple of stones in between, but with natural shade. There is also parking right in front of it available. The sea is easily accessible, no stones to worry about when you walk in. No loungers and umbrellas though, but a changing cabin and a shower. Best of all was the restaurant in the back. This was the only beach we did twice.
6.) Cheronissos beach: about five minutes to walk down from the bus stop, but surely more than 10 minutes up. It’s quite steep, but the view is amazing on this inlet. It’s a very small sandy beach with pebbles, and only one restaurant open in June. There are supposedly three, so maybe they’ll open later. There’s a pier along the left side of the bay, which people used in the afternoon to put down their towels. The beach has a changing stall, a shower, and a toilet. The water is easy to access with sand all the way in.
