The taco and tortilla restaurant Maíz takes no reservation. Which is more than welcome, when you meet up with friends spontaneously. When I arrived Maíz was empty except for one table. Within the next half an hour the restaurant filled up, and some diners even sat down outside.
The menu is simple and straightforward. This self-service restaurant offers three kinds of tacos every day: beef, pork, and veggie. There’s also soup, salad, and chips available. We were told that everything is home-made and organic.
On the evening we visited we started with self-made taco chips and two kinds of sauces. One was a smoky, spicy BBQ sauce, while the other one was a fruity tomato salsa. I liked both, but preferred the tomato salsa. My friend loved the BBQ sauce and cleaned out the little bowl with his finger. The chips were crunchy and slightly greasy, but very tasty. A wonderful starter!
Since there was soup available we tried that one as well. On that Friday two options were on hand, so we got them both. One was a spicy tomato soup, the other one a black bean soup. The spice level in the tomato soup was quite hot. I loved it since it didn’t took away any of the flavor. The black bean soup had a deep color and a rich flavor. Both had a sprinkle of coriander on top, which added a fresh touch. I really enjoyed both soups.
Finally we got to the tacos and in another twist, two kinds of veggies were available. We both ordered the trio of pork, beef, and veggie and I opted for the fennel potato taco, while my friend got the sweet potatoes. The tacos come in the spice level you think you manage. I got medium and it was quite potent. They were difficult to eat with lots of good sauce dripping on the plate. I had to eat fairly quick for the tacos not to go mushy.
While the veggie version was okay, I loved the pork taco, which was so tasty and yummy. My friend ordered two more of it in his second round. I ate the beef taco last and compared to the pork it was disappointing. It was a bit dry and not enough flavor.
We washed it all down with a local beer, brewed especially for Maíz. I haven’t had Mexican food in a while and I really loved the experience. Despite Maíz being self-service, we got everything brought to the table. The owner tries to make everyone feel welcome, which definitely worked in my case. I will be back for sure. Yours, Pollybert
