When you get to a certain age birthdays are not celebrated with parties but with dinners. So what better way to celebrate ‘middle age’ than with a mix of both. This was very well done with a group of my friends shortly before Christmas at the tapas bar “Der Fuchs und die Trauben“.
The community table in the middle of the restaurant was the perfect spot for us. Not only did we see everything that was going on around us, later on another group joined us which made the evening even merrier.
But in this post I want to review the food and if it is wort your while. So let me start by saying that it is! Since it is a tapas bar we shared to get the most out of it. Cat and I ordered five different tapas and I was fine with it. Cat of course could have ordered the happily the rest of the menu solely because it was so good. Between the two of us we tried the gravelax, sautéed calamari, the prawns, pork belly and the pimientos de padron. Each dish was delicious with the prawns being the weakest. The kitchen had sliced them in half which made them hard to peel and also a bit dry. The calamari were perfectly sautéed and with the couscous a lovely composition.
The gravelax was the perfect combination of melting in the mouth with a hint of tartness from the grapefruit. And the pimientos were right on point with a good dose of sea salt.
Interestingly enough there seems to be some kind of fusion going on and the last tapas that we tried was a soy-glazed pork belly with pickled cucumbers. The meat was so tender and juicy, heaven!
Our vegetarian friends also found something to eat and I was told the croquetas and the sweet potato and shiitake tempura were also excellent.
Since it was a birthday after all we got a little cake and a mousse for dessert. I tried the chocolate crostata which had a super intense flavor. Definitely something to share. For the mousse I was too slow to taste it, I assume it was therefore really good.
Service was the whole evening excellent. Since we had quite a few bottles of wine we also needed water to wash it all down. The waitress brought constantly to our table, mostly without even asking for it. I love it when the waiter is so attentive. Overall a lovely place with very tasty tapas combinations and at a great value. I’ll be back! Yours, Pollybert
