On a warm and muggy summer evening Restaurant Zweitbester surprised me with air condition. This is not usual in Vienna but with the changing climate we appreciate it more and more. So instead of sweating outside we found a haven in the cool dining room.
Due to the cool environment most of us ordered a starter as well. I got the cold mango (or so I believe) soup which tasted great but more like a lassi in a bowl. It could have used some spice.
Others fared better with home-made falafel. They had an unusual size and good consistency. I tried and loved them. Very tasty! That was also a big portion which is easily enough for one as main dish.
The salad bowl with avocado, chanterelles, blueberries, sprouts, nuts and quinoa got the best reviews. The combination sounds lovely and it looked really enticing.
The sesame balls on babaganoush also convinced and got finished in no time. While the chanterelles risotto had a great taste but was deemed too mushy. You can’t have it all in a restaurant that is all over the place.
I for one ordered the burger because I thought nothing can go wrong with it. Not really true. While there was nothing wrong with it, there was also nothing great. Way too much cocktail sauce inside, bland buns and while the idea of roasted potatoes with rosemary might sound great on paper, it didn’t work in reality. Fries might have saved the dish. Oh, and it didn’t look good enough to photograph. So there you go.
I liked the place though, it’s a nice neighborhood restaurant. It will never be famous for its food, but at least the service was trying. So in the end, if I’m in the area, I would come for a drink. Yours, Pollybert
