Mae Aurel is a hybrid between a café, bar, and brasserie which starts with breakfast at 9am on weekends. Which is early for the city. Since there is covered outdoor seating and it rained really hard we sat inside and got overwhelmed by a strong smell of bacon. Not in a bad way, just really intense.
In the end neither of us ordered anything with bacon though but instead we get the Eggs Benedict and a version thereof. The Eggs Benedict are just one egg and come on a thick slab of brioche which is not toasted. The tomato pesto underneath has strong flavor and a bit overpowering. And unfortunately the sauce Hollandaise tastes as if comes from a package. This is not a winning combination.
I on the other hand order Madame Croissant which is a mix of Eggs Benedict and Florentine, ergo ham and spinach, served on a croissant. The croissant is flaky and crunchy and is perfect for this combination. The egg is slightly runny and mixes everything up. I love it, except for the sauce, which is of course the same sauce Hollandaise as my friend got with his egg. There is something distinctly wrong with it. Too bad really, because I loved the overall combo of Madame Croissant.
The service was friendly and really quick. The breakfast menu is extensive and has quite a number of interesting dishes on it. I am still not convinced though that Mae Aurel is a place to which I will return. In hindsight the intense kitchen smell was off-putting and the sauce was just not good. Yours, Pollybert
