Motto am Fluss is a fixture on the Viennese breakfast scene. Locals and tourists alike come to this prime location next to the Danube channel. Usually the river front makes for a pleasant environment with a light breeze, but not so on this sunny morning. Wasps were out in droves and summer in the city has definitely become hotter.
We asked for a table in the shade, as almost everyone else around us. Only one table braved the sun on that early Saturday morning. The hostess was a bit miffed that I even asked for that, since Motto am Fluss was apparently already doing its best to place everyone in the shade. But how was I supposed to know that when there was so much available in the sunny section?
The restaurant was busy with most tables already occupied at 9am and shortly thereafter. Without a reservation it might be hard to get a table. We placed our order and observed the neighboring tables dealing with the many wasps. Some customers gave up the fight and moved inside. The nuisance was real as we would notice just a little bit later.
My friend ordered the ‘Motto’ All-Day Breakfast Sandwich, which consists of toasted bread, bacon, ham, egg, cheese, avocado, tomato, salad, and spicy mayonnaise. It was exactly as much as it sounded. The sandwich was so thick that my friend forwent eating it by hand, but rather used the cutlery. Too bad really, since it was nicely wrapped in paper.
As you can see the menu didn’t promise too much, the sandwich had distinct layers of everything listed. The wasps thought it enticing as well. A minute later the first one sat down in search of a feast.
Interestingly enough the sandwich tasted rather bland except for the spicy mayo. Even though there were so many good things inside it had a very neutral taste. My friend was disappointed, understandably so. Who doesn’t expect to find at least a modicum of taste in such a big sandwich?
I got the ‘Motto’ Eggs Benedict with toasted Motto bread, two poached eggs, mushrooms, cream cheese, and sauce Hollandaise. I didn’t order anything extra, available was salmon or bacon, but rather left it in the vegetarian version. The taste of the sauce Hollandaise worked well with everything in combination. Unfortunately one of the poached eggs was overdone. The toasted bread was really hard to cut, a different kind of knife would have worked wonders. I loved the addition of the greens, but the mushrooms were not to my liking. Roasted mushrooms have a lighter color in my kitchen. The dish was okay, but I have definitely had better eggs Benedict in Vienna.
So even though I pass Motto am Fluss regularly, I can’t say when I will be back. Drinks are always fine, but the food didn’t convince me this time. Maybe next time I will come for coffee and cake, just to try something new. The location after all is wonderful. Yours, Pollybert
