Breakfast at Öfferl Bistro Landstraße – update

Right after the bakery Öfferl opened its first location in the Wollzeile in the first district, I went there for breakfast and wasn’t impressed. The bakery had no decent breakfast options at the time, just its open-faced sandwiches and Viennoiseries. So when I read that Öfferl now has new breakfast choices I was more than happy to give it a go. Especially since I love their bread.

So on a recent Saturday we tested the 3rd district location on Landstraße. The bakery here has a rather large terrace on a little square to the side of the shop. Reservations are only possible for inside, but if you find a place outside you are welcome to switch. Öfferl was already busy at 9 am, which is astonishing for Vienna. But there were also a a couple of tourists.

The service appeared a bit rattled by the onslaught of customers, until a second staff person helped out. Since eggs Benedict are on the menu, this is what we ordered. But also the other breakfast combinations sounded inviting. Coffee and juice arrived promptly, and with it the wasps. That is really annoying this summer in the city.

Once the eggs Benedict sat in front of me I couldn’t see the ham for all the salad. It did look lovely though, especially in this color combination. Two poached eggs nestled on top of two thick slices of toasted brioche, which was filled with ham. Personally I thought that ham kind of got lost. With all the greenery and the lot of sauce Hollandaise, the ham had not enough flavor. In combination though it was nice. Which is a bland word and totally unfair. Because the eggs Benedict at Öfferl Bistro Landstrasse are not bland, but they are also not remarkable. They are just a nice breakfast. The sauce Hollandaise was furthermore a tad too runny in my opinion, tastewise fine though.

Overall I found the breakfast experience at Öfferl Bistro a bit underwhelming. While all produce is organically sourced and you can be sure that’s all from small regional producers, I found the setting quite hectic. Maybe it’s different, when you sit inside. Also the eggs Benedict were just not memorable. If I hadn’t made some notes about the breakfast right after the meal, I couldn’t have written about it. The dish looked pretty though. Reservations are only for inside, for the terrace you need to wait. Yours, Pollybert
