Café Mayer is not a coffee house you would visit if you do not live there. It’s far up in the 18th district, not really in walking distance from anything else. Recently I read though that all this was about to change since the bakery has a new chef and now offers delicious lunch menus. Since they also have breakfast I needed to see that for myself.
The café is tugged away in a corner, the garden hidden behind a tall hedge to give customers in summer some privacy. It looks inviting with its red sun blind proclaiming proudly its name. Café Mayer is not only a coffee house, but also a bakery. Which makes the whole trip already way more interesting.
Inside it is small, with just a few tables in front of the glass display and counter, and a small back room. I am glad I made a reservation, although there was another table available at this time of day.
The menu was rather short, with four different kinds of egg dishes. Variations of omelettes as well as ham and eggs. There were also two kinds of Viennese breakfast combinations, one sweet with jam and the other savory with ham and cheese. Both came with different rolls. And there was also some kind of porridge with fruits. A couple of extras were also available, like avocado or smoked salmon.
My friend ordered the large ‘Mayer’ breakfast combination with three different kinds of bread rolls that also included a brioche, a large selection of ham and cheese, as well as butter and jam. The bread selection looked fantastic and I envied him the brioche. But also the ham and cheese plate, with ham from Thum, was nicely presented and invited one to dig in. Best of all was the big ball of butter and full bowl of jam.
Funnily enough he liked the brioche the least and deemed it rather dry. But the rest was tasty and of great quality. He loved it, which is high praise from him.
For myself it was ham & eggs on that Saturday. I quite enjoyed that at Café Mayer this dish is served with only two eggs. I always find that three eggs are one too many. I added some bread with butter and chive on the side. Not so much for dipping, but rather to have some carbs as well. The bread was a bit too soft though, there was no crust and it lacked any substance. A bread roll would have probably been better.
Honestly the ham & eggs were a bit boring. I prefer it when they have some color and there’s a slight taste of roasting aroma. Unfortunately with the soft bread, this was not a winner.
What was a winner though was the raisin bun dipped in sugar, which I chose at the counter. I needed something interesting after the eggs. The bun was so yummy that I forgot to take a picture, sorry! But it was really special!
While we ate breakfast there was a constant stream of customers buying fresh bread and pastries. And judging by the raisin bun, rightly so! I am honestly relieved that I do not live around Café Mayer, otherwise this would be my go-to guilty pleasure. What a tasty little thing! So even though there was no new chef on breakfast duty, as far as I can tell from my experience, Café Mayer might be even worth a detour. But if you are in the area, this is definitely a great place to frequent. Yours, Pollybert
