Breakfast at Bouvier

Breakfast at a hotel is not my favorite after a couple disappointments in Vienna, like Donnersmarkt or &flora. I mean it’s been a while so these could have improved, but overall I am a skeptic when it comes to breakfast at a hotel. Still, I want to give new places a chance, and because there are also laudable exemptions like Chez Bernard. So recently I made my way to Hoxton hotel, a place I already know from drinks at Caya Coco or snacks in the entrance hall. Which were lovely by the way and the service was excellent.

But let’s get to the breakfast at Bouvier, the in-house restaurant of Hoxton. A reservation is necessary if you want to get a table. It seems to be easiest to get a seat at the bar for walk-ins, which has its own charm.

The breakfast menu is quite international except for a Viennese slice of bread with jam. Something I eat definitely at home from time to time, but have never seen at a menu so far. I decided to get the eggs Benedict for a change and my friend ordered the Full Bouvier breakfast. While we waited our coffee arrived and I soaked up the relaxed atmosphere. Hoxton has a very boutique hotel feel with its small dining room of Bouvier.

While I was already a bit annoyed with the weak coffee, there’s only so much water a long espresso tolerates before it’s an Americano, I was gobbsmacked seeing my breakfast. The eggs Benedict looked quite dry at first glance.

It tasted a lot better than it looked though, which is rarely the case. The muffin was wonderful, even toasted it was soft and pillowy. Once I cut into the eggs there was enough sauce and I mopped it all up with the muffin. But just not enough for all the muffin. The ham was absolutely lovely, a nice thick cut and wonderfully roasted. With more sauce Hollandaise or a buttered muffin this could have been great. I heard from a friend though that he got way more sauce Hollandaise on his eggs, so maybe it all depends on the chef on duty.

The Full Bouvier didn’t fared similarly. It looked really dry and turned out to be so. Only the grilled tomato and mushroom provided any juicy part. This breakfast dish sorely missed the beans. My friend deemed it okay but he had definitely better.

After this first visit I had mixed feelings about my experience at Bouvier. Funnily enough I went back the next day, without a reservation, and got seated at the bar. I loved watching the chefs preparing the dishes or just plating. That morning I was bit hungover and got the NY Breakfast Sandwic, a roll filled with bacon, omelette, cheddar cheese, and Siracha sauce on the side. It’s the perfect breakfast after a night out, unfortunately I do not have a picture. Always a good sign in my case.

I do have a picture though of the avocado toast with a poached egg. This appears to be a staple for my friend, since it was the second time he ordered it when I was with him. The avocado spread looked fresh, definitely not out of a tub. Just the egg was tiny, I really wonder which supplier Bouvier is using.

Bouvier has very friendly service and I quite enjoyed my visit here. The breakfast menu has enough dishes to get you going, albeit not everything is satisfying. But the restaurant certainly has its own charm and I am sure I will return here in the near future. Yours, Pollybert
