Breakfast at Waldemar Tagesbar – update

It has been a while that I visited Waldemar Tagesbar, so it was time for a return and see how things were going here. What was noticeable from the start was that the reservation process had changed. On weekends and national holidays Waldemar Tagesbar offers two hour time slots at fixed times. That’s the first I’ve ever heard about something like this in Vienna.

It speaks for the popularity of the restaurant that they can afford to do so. Understandable for Hietzing, since this district doesn’t offer a lot of breakfast choices. But I just hope that this will not become a trend and other restaurants follow suit. Personally for this one time I didn’t mind so much, as 9am is my typical breakfast time on Saturday. But for other occasions I would like to keep my meal time options flexible. Last time I was here I wasn’t impressed with Waldemar Tagesbar, so let’s see if that has changed as well.

The first thing I noticed when I arrived, shortly after 9am, was that the café was full. Like almost every table full, which is unheard of. Honestly, I think I’ve never seen a café filled to capacity at 9am on a Saturday anywhere in Vienna. Except maybe at Café Central, where tourists line up night and day no matter what. Maybe they should switch to Waldemar Tagesbar since it is right around the corner from Schloss Schönbrunn and at least worth the effort.

Because Waldemar Tagesbar made a great impression on me. I loved the new menu, which offered quite a lot of combinations with something savory and sweet, as well as simple breakfast dishes. I had my sight set on Turkish eggs, which can be fantastic when well made. Waldemar Tagesbar didn’t disappoint in that respect.

The yogurt didn’t have too much garlic in it to ruin my day and wasn’t too cold, but rather had room temperature. Which was very much appreciated since I hate it when the eggs cool quickly. The chili oil gave it all a nice kick and the overall flavor was just right! I just wish the eggs would have had a bit more of a runny yolk. In my opinion they were poached too long. The bread had a great crust and was soft in the middle to scoop up the yogurt. Yummy!

My friend ordered the Shakshouka with additional feta cheese, which came in a cast iron pan. The eggs were a bit overdone as well, but he didn’t mind so much as they were correctly cooked in the tomato sauce. The sauce was perfectly seasoned and a fluffy pita helped to soak it all up. It was a very good dish!

Service was friendly and quite quick, especially in light of the restaurant working on full capacity. My only problem was the noise level. I am not sure if that was due to the many people or just really bad acoustics at Waldemar Tagesbar. It was really loud and I had to say ‘I beg your pardon’ a couple of times. At least for breakfast on the weekend Waldemar Tagesbar is not the best place for some quiet time to reminisce. But if you want to enjoy a lively breakfast with friends, this is the place to be. You just might not hear everything they say though. Yours, Pollybert
