Breakfast at Waldemar Tagesbar

Quite a long way from the center you’ll find Waldemar Tagesbar in the 13th district. It’s near the tourist attractions of Schloss Schönbrunn and the zoo. But it is also super popular due to lack of other places in the area and without reservation, you can’t get a table. At least for breakfast, I don’t know about other times during the day. So I made the trip to the far reaches of Vienna and left home rather early for a Saturday morning. Read on to see if it was worth it.

I arrived shortly before it opened on the dot of nine and waited to be brought to the table. We got lucky to receive an outdoor place. Without requesting it with your reservation, this doesn’t happen though.

The menu looked super fine, with a lot of interesting dishes. We ended up with Brick Lane Shoreditch – London breakfast and Huevos Rancheros. I love Huevos Rancheros and sometimes make them at home. Of course it’s a treat to get them in a restaurant. In the end they tasted fine but were nothing special.

Huevos Rancheros @Waldemar Tagesbar

The other dish, with the really long name, was essentially an English breakfast. Honestly, it looked kind of boring to me, but my friend liked it. He did say though as well, that it was nothing special.

English breakfast @Waldemar Tagesbar

Waldemar Tagesbar got the bacon right with this plate. The English never fry the bacon really crispy and compared to the bacon on my plate I was astonished that there was a difference. I can’t be more excited about the restaurant unfortunately. I think the reason is that the menu sounds so promising, so exciting. And then the food is so generic.

pink Mimosa @Waldemar Tagesbar

Best of all was the Mimosa with pink grapefruit instead of orange juice. That something so simple can make me so happy. The service was very friendly if not really attentive. After 45 minutes I had to ask the waitress what had happened with our order. She apologized quickly enough and we got an extra coffee on the house, because the order ticket got lost somewhere. So happy endings all around. Still, I don’t think I will put Waldemar Tagesbar on my regular breakfast list. It’s nice enough, but just on the wrong side of special. Yours, Pollybert
