Breakfast at Drechsler Wienzeile – update

Breakfast at Drechsler Wienzeile is always a pleasure and not just because I appreciate the available mini Gin Tonic. That’s just an added bonus which I enjoy responsibly. It’s the whole vibe of the place, the friendly service, plus the comfortable seating. And let’s not forget that Drechsler Wienzeile serves delicious breakfast and brunch dishes all day long.

Gone are the times, when this coffee house opened its doors 23/7. Now it’s an all day brunch place, which closes latest at 5pm on weekends. In any case I am a repeat visitor, so it was time to see if the food was still as good as I remembered. The place is always busy, so without a reservation it’s hard to get a table. Something you should keep in mind before coming to Drechsler Wienzeile.

The friendly waitress brought immediately water to the table and my coffee followed shortly thereafter.

My friend ordered the eggs Benedict, which are served here on English muffin with a brown butter sauce Hollandaise. I am not sure what the croutons where doing on top, but the eggs were excellent as usual. Runny egg yolks and the delicious sauce made for a savory combination, which was mopped up by the muffin.

Since I had just recently had a forgettable encounter with an eggs Benedict variation, I decided to get the Spicy Chorizo Omelette with extra feta. Made from two eggs, with fried chorizo, Jalapeños, spring onions, and fresh pepper. An avocado and marinated baby Swiss chard were on the side. The omelette was really spicy, there were a lot of Jalapeños  and chorizo inside. I am not convinced that the extra feta was worth its money though, it only made a sporadic appearance. The Swiss chard must have bypassed the dressing station, however the bread was tasty.

Overall I am not sure if I want to order it again. Even though there were a lot of different flavors and textures on my plate, it tasted mostly of the Jalapeños.

Still it was a pleasant visit, although we had to leave exactly two hours after our arrival. Drechsler Wienzeile is busy and the tables are booked all trough the day. Which doesn’t really make for the most relaxing setting if you want to meet friends to catch up. Sometimes two hours are not enough. And while lots of restaurants have the same policy in place, this was the first time that I was asked to leave instead of leaving on my own. That doesn’t feel so good. The mini Gin Tonic though was at least as good as I remember it. Yours, Pollybert
