Why I didn’t think I would need a reservation for La Crèmerie is beyond me. Probably because I know the area around the Meidling market quite well and assumed it would not be busy on a Saturday morning. I could not have been more wrong. Luckily my friend arrived right on time and managed to get us a table, booked but available for an hour. Ample time to sample the goods and see what all the buzz was about. The small café was so busy, with the door constantly opening, that people even sat outside on this dreary morning.

The menu is short and offers just a handful of combinations, perfectly fitting for this tiny coffeehouse. Space is limited and La Crèmerie wisely keeps breakfast ambitions in check. At first glance the options seem a bit pricey, but since the hot drink of choice is included, the pricing feels fair. La Crèmerie is a French establishment with a Moroccan background, so I ordered ‘Le Classique’, while my friend went for ‘Le Méditerranée’.

Our coffees arrived promptly, and water had already been brought with the menus. The coffee was delicious, full-bodied, smooth, and without any acidity. Apparently they roast it themselves. Excellent work!

I found the name ‘Le Classique‘ fascinating, because the French, like many other Europeans, are not exactly famous for eating breakfast. But what stood before me was quintessentially French. Ham, cheese, fruit salad, baguette, a croissant, and a mini crème brûlée. There was also a small glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. The soft-boiled egg and apricot jam were more of a nod to Vienna though. Altogether it looked fabulous, and I was ready to dig in.

The egg was perfectly cooked, soft inside with no glibbery egg white in sight. The ham, more like pastrami, was absolutely delicious. The brie was soft and creamy, definitely not straight from the fridge. The fruit salad was cut into tiny pieces so that nothing was larger than a blueberry. Best of all was the crème brûlée with its satisfying crack before revealing the smooth, vanilla-rich cream underneath. I never knew what I was missing for breakfast. Everything was fantastic!
My friend went the vegetarian route with ‘Le Méditerranée‘, which included pita bread, ratatouille, hummus, dried tomatoes, feta with salad, avocado, falafel, yogurt with nuts and honey, and a glass of orange juice.

Le Mediterranée @La Crèmerie
Everything tasted freshly made, especially the ratatouille and hummus. Both were flavorful and the hummus had a hint of spice. The small falafels were crisp and worked beautifully with the dip. The avocado was simply sliced and served, fresh and ripe. The salad with feta was the least inspired dish, just greens and the one cube of feta cheese with a dressing that leaned a bit too heavy on the vinegar. The yogurt, on the other hand, came topped with a generous mix of nuts. We both agreed it was completely different than the breakfast place from last week.
It has been a while since I was pleasantly surprised, but La Crèmerie managed just that. This small coffee shop has a warm and intimate vibe, and you can see the attention to detail in every dish. A truly lovely breakfast spot, I will definitely be back. Yours, Pollybert
