Breakfast at Crème de la Crème – La Petite

The second location of Crème de la Crème in Vienna has taken over the space of my former favourite cake shop.

Back then, the large window showcased all kinds of cakes, as it had been turned into a refrigerator. Now it is an empty space with a flower arrangement and does not seem to be used for much else.

The location itself has not increased in size, but what was formerly just a shop is now a small café with a generous cake display inside and exactly ten seats. There are two tables, one for two and one for four people, as well as a sideboard that accommodates another four guests.

Savoury breakfast options are limited to two Viennese breakfast variations, one small and one large, as well as a selection of sandwiches. Crème de la Crème is clearly a place you visit for something sweet as the sweet breakfast options are numerous. Nevertheless, we decided to share the Mediterrane Vibes sandwich, made with home made spelt bread, cream cheese, tomatoes, olive oil, and fleur de sel, and then also order the sweet Striezel Frühstück to share.

The brioche arrived first. Three slices of brioche were served with butter and two kinds of jam. I loved the size of the slices, exactly how I would cut them myself. The butter was still a little hard though, so we waited for the savoury sandwich to arrive.

The ‘Mediterrane Vibes‘ sandwich with tomatoes was pleasant and would probably taste even better in summer when tomatoes are in season. Still, I was surprised by how well seasoned it was and, paired with the home made bread, it was quite lovely. Simple, but surprisingly tasty. Not the kind of breakfast I would travel far for, but a very nice snack when you are in the area.

The ‘Striezel Frühstück‘, on the other hand, did not just surprise me, it blew me away. The brioche was soft, yet had enough density to hold butter and jam beautifully. The flavour was absolutely fantastic, and for this alone I will definitely return to Crème de la Crème. Next time I need to check whether it is possible to buy it to take home. The red jam, whose fruit I could not identify, worked especially well as it was more acidic and balanced the sweetness perfectly. All in all, a total winner.

The terrace outside looked very inviting, with the sun shining on it during the morning hours. I cannot wait for spring to arrive so I can sit outside and wrap myself in the provided blankets. On that Saturday morning it was simply too cold for that, even with the sunshine. Yours, Pollybert
