The Chessmen Thief by Barbara Henderson: The chess pieces of Lewis were an extraordinary find, and today they can be seen in Edinburgh, London, or Stornoway. Once you see them, they capture your imagination and apparently the same happened to the author. The story follows 12 year old Kylan, captured as little boy on the isle of Lewis and working ever since for his Viking masters. The craftsmanship that has gone into these figures is truly amazing, do I loved that the story focused on that and later how such a treasure trove could have come about. Not just for history nerds.
A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas: Let’s start with the good news, there will be a book six and seven. I can’t believe that after five books I am still invested in these characters and want to know what happens next. Especially as more characters have been added in this volume and they have all grown dear to me. I loved Nesta and Cassian’s story, how she found her way and her friends along the journey. The training sessions with her friends to become Valkyries might even inspire me to go to the gym more often. The spice level has definitely increased since book one and has reached my personal limit. Much more and it will start taking away from the story.
The Heir Apparent by Rebecca Armitage: Lexi or Princess Alexandria has left the British court and now lives in Tasmania, with one more year of residency left to become a doctor. But fate has other plans and suddenly she becomes the heir apparent. I am not sure how accurate all the behind the scenes details of the British Royals are, but the author previously worked as a journalist, so perhaps there is some truth to it. For any gossip lover this is a wonderful story, but it is also a great piece of fiction about finding your way and discovering what is important in life. Hugely enjoyable.
The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood: I am definitely on a good reading run at the moment, because this book just about killed me. It kept me up at night until the wee hours, even though I needed to get up and actually start my day. Okay, maybe not for momentous things, but even on vacation you need to get moving. Olive and Adam captured my heart and attention and made me root for them so hard. Their sweet and funny banter was everything I could wish for. What a joyride!
