Mochi Ramen Bar

One of the first nice evenings in Vienna and I was off to the market to test and try the Mochi Ramen Bar. Quite a lot of places have written about it (see here, here and here) and I love their main restaurant, so of course I wanted to jump up the bandwagon and try the new place.

So this market is not my usual market but rather off the beaten path in the 2nd district. When we arrived there shortly after 6pm it was not a big deal to get a table, but it was already quite busy for the early hour.

The ramen bar is super tastefully and invitingly done up. Inside were a couple of tables on the wall and a long bar/kitchen with tables along side it. Since the weather was so inviting we sat outside on one of the community tables. Once we had finished eating we were already joined by others. Not a place were you stay alone for long.

We decided on only eating the ramen for which the name of the place stands and to forego a starter (what with lent and so on). The starters looked amazing though and the people who later shared our table ordered everything on the menu and finished them all. I would conclude that they were tasty.

I had the ramen with pork belly and my friend ordered the one with spicy ground beef. The ramen comes in a large bowl, well presented and with an appetizing smell. It was just not that great. I found mine was greasy. Yes, I know I ordered pork belly but there was some extra fat inside, at least this was the way it tasted. We were also instructed to finish the noodles first, probably so that they don’t soak up all the soup. So the rest inside my bowl was a milky colored broth with fat drops swimming on top. It’s very rich and maybe because the soup cooled quickly the grease was just too clingy.

My friend liked her spicy broth, I tried it at the very end when it was already quite cool and I found it also to greasy and with an aftertaste that needs acquiring.

Not really sure what to think of it and in a shared understanding we both said that we don’t need to come back for more. Not worth the trip in my humble opinion. Yours, Pollybert
