Books

Here’s Looking At You by Mhairi McFarlane: As far as chick lit books go, Mhairi McFarlane is right up on top. I like her stories and how they never feel insignificant. There is always something in them which makes you think. And I like that. Chick lit is a fluffy genre and to achieve an entertainment factor plus something on the side is always worth my time. Not that I read worthless stuff as well, but still. Anna and James are relatable characters and their story is heartwarming.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng: What a powerful story! It sneaked up on me with a quiet beginning and then got more and more intense. The two lifestyles which clash together can’t be anymore different. And still there is a common denominator. Until the pressure becomes unbearable and all hell breaks loose. There is drama in this story and that’s what makes it worth your time. I have to say I really like Celeste Ng, this is already her second book I love.

Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff: Wow, that book didn’t leave a lasting impression. I finished it about two weeks before writing this and I had to look up what it was about. The love story between Lotto and Mathilda sounds like a fairy tale when you read his side. But when she tells the story all of a sudden all envy is gone. It is an interesting read but it has some lengths in between. Could have done with a sharper editing.

Scandinavians: In Search of the Soul of the North by Robert Ferguson: What a long-winded book. I really liked some parts of it but others just bored me. Who cares what the author drank in this pub and where he went for a walk while talking with that friend? I liked everything in between and even some of the more philosophical stuff. But overall the story could have been told with a 100 pages less. I do have a better insight now in the Scandinavian soul though and it reinforced my wish to practice Norwegian.
