Café Demi is not really a place that you would pass by chance. I was missing a breakfast place in the 14th district, so I made the track to the outskirts of Vienna. It took my longer than going to the office, especially since it was another ten minutes on foot from the metro. Cafe Demi lies in a residential area with not much else around. I am glad we had a reservation, because it filled up pretty quickly after 9am.

I am glad we had a reservation, because it filled up pretty quickly after we sat down. Half an hour into our breakfast Café Demi was quite busy, but there seemed to be enough tables available for walk-ins.

The breakfast menu was long and had a distinct Greek influence. Finally something new for me to try. I settled on ‘Greek Benedict’, which was two poached eggs on homemade brioche buns with feta, tomatoes, olives, olive oil, and oregano. This sounded light and lovely. Maybe not best choice on that rainy day, but quite different from the usual breakfast dishes.

Unfortunately Greek Benedict had several problems. First of all it was cold, so the eggs had been poached in advance and then kept somewhere cool. The brioche had a very sweet flavor, while the feta lacked any typical taste. The tomato was unripe and had been kept in the fridge, so whatever flavor it had to begin with, got lost in the cold environment. The black olives on the other hand tasted of too much brine and were the overwhelming flavor of the combo. All in all a weird dish, although I think with better preparation and ingredients it can be interesting.
My friend was also happy to try something different and ordered Kayanas, the Greek version of scrambled eggs. It included feta, tomatoes, olives, onions, fresh herbs, and a bread roll on the side. Basically the same as I had ordered just in a different state.

He loved his breakfast dish, most of all because it was hot. That must have been enjoyable. In this dish the flavor combination worked and he was quite pleased with his order.
I liked the friendly atmosphere and the relaxed service. At Café Demi I felt a bit like on vacation, maybe because it’s so far away from my home? If you are in the area, it’s worth stopping by. Yours, Pollybert
