Books

The Scarlet Lion by Elizabeth Chadwick: Even though William Marshal has been dead a little bit over 800 years, he died in 1219, I cried a lot when I finished the book. Not the best impression on a plane full of people. The third book in the Marshal series deals with his time as Earl of Pembroke and later as regent of England. He packed so much life in his lifetime that I often wondered how that was even possible at that time. But the facts are all there. Great book, amazing story!

The Bookseller of Inverness by S.G. MacLean: It took me a while to get into the book. The story picks up a couple of years after Culloden in Inverness. The town is occupied by the Redcoats and the local Jacobites still under constant surveillance. The book is more of a mystery than a love story, there are way too many dead people and just a few occasional glances in the love department. I enjoyed the historical part of it, since it gave a deep insight into how life for the Scots after Culloden must have been. Interesting read.

This Love by Lotte Jeffs: The title sounds simple enough, at least that’s what I thought. But the love story was not a conventional one. Instead it’s a love story of two friends, both queer, who dream of having one day a family together. I loved how Mae and Ari connected on so many levels without ever becoming a couple. The book managed to educate me without ever obviously doing so. But also the characters have a lot of growing to do.  Family is so much more than your stereotypical format, you can create your own version and just live happily. A beautiful book!

Deep Cuts by Holly Brickley: Percy and Joe meet at uni, while he is still in a relationship with Zoe. Weirdly these three forge a strong friendship that stays with them over the coming years. Deep Cuts is a love story, but it is also a book about finding your way and knowing your worth. While it was a bit slow in the beginning, I thoroughly enjoyed the second half of the book. There were fantastic one liners and loads of music references and recommendations. I need a playlist for the Percy approved songs. I really enjoyed reading it!
