Breakfast at Budapest Bagel – Vienna

The bagel is not typically from Vienna, but it is also not typically from Budapest. Apparently it first showed up within the Jewish community in Poland, which sounds about right to me. When I lived in  Montreal we always bought our bagels at Fairmount Bagel, which has a Jewish founder. I have no idea where he originally came from, but the bagel is definitely not something Austrian. Why the Hungarians claim it here, I do not know.

In any case Budapest Bagel only sells bagels as sandwiches and not as a bread item on its own, which is a shame. I still miss the bagels from Montreal and last summer, while in New York, I bought two dozen and froze them once I was back home.

So it was a little disappointing that Budapest Bagel is neither here nor there. Inside there are only a couple of seats and you cannot take home a dozen bagels. On this cold Saturday morning we decided nonetheless to eat inside and sat down on high chairs along the wall after ordering our breakfast at the register.

As classic breakfast bagels Budapest Bagel offers two omelette based options. Of course there is also a long list of all kinds of bagel variations. I did not choose the bagel itself, but it apparently comes in different options from plain to sesame and everything seasoning.

I got the avocado bagel with cream cheese, omelette, avocado, and salad along with an Americano to wash it all down. The coffee was good and probably made with a double espresso, otherwise the color would have been different. Check out the size of the espresso right next to it.

The bagel was nice enough, although not a revelation. It was full of cream cheese and salad with a really thin slice of omlette, and a layer of avocado. The bagel itself was plain and I was never asked if I wanted any other variety. The cream cheese came out at every bite and I constantly had to either lick my fingers or use a napkin. That does not mean it was finger licking good. It was rather a bit bland, probably due to my choice. With bacon it would have been more flavorful. In any case it was a big portion.

My friend got the BLT melted bagel, which was exactly what it sounded like. Who does not like bacon and melted cheese? There was quite a bit of bacon, again an immense amount of cream cheese, and two layers of iceberg salad. He really liked his bagel but also commented on how difficult it was to eat by hand.

As much as I love bagels, this was not the right spot for breakfast. Breakfast should either be eaten sitting down properly or standing in a bar in Italy, just drinking coffee and eating a small cornetto. Budapest Bagel caters more to takeout customers and most of their clients have understood the concept. During our stay there was a constant stream of people ordering bagels, but all of them left with their purchase. Only one other instagrammer and us chose to stay. Next time I will take mine to go as well. Yours, Pollybert
