Who doesn’t want to go and see the world? Welt Cafe offers a glimpse into the kitchens of faraway places, at least according to the menu.

Welt Cafe @Vienna
On a recent Saturday, with of course a reservation, I arrived at Welt Cafe only to notice that we were the only customers there so early in the morning. Maybe not so necessary to make a reservation here.

Our waitress explained that this was due to the current school vacation week, but I really don’t mind sitting alone. As long as the service works, everything is fine by me. No complaints on that front in any case. She was very friendly despite the early hour. Coffee and juice arrived quickly while we studied the menu.

In the end I decided on a Sudanese breakfast, mostly because I was curious about the bean dip with feta cheese. And when else would I have the chance to try something like this? It was served with a bread roll and some salad. Since I love having an egg with my breakfast, I asked for a fried egg on the side. The plate looked interesting and quite inviting. I am not sure whether Sudanese people actually eat something like this for breakfast, but beans certainly make sense to me.

The roll was definitely Austrian, as the Kornspitz was invented here. The fried egg was excellent, even if slightly on the cool side. I do love it though when the egg white gets a little crisp. The bean dip was very tasty and I enjoyed the addition of feta. Together with the roll it worked beautifully. The roll had a nice crust and a soft interior, exactly how I like it. Even the salad was marinated and, despite this being breakfast, it worked surprisingly well with the bean dip. A really interesting and delicious combination.
My friend went for something more familiar and ordered the English breakfast with baked beans, two fried eggs, bacon and sausage, tomatoes, and two slices of toast. The tomatoes were not roasted, but everything else looked good enough. There were no complaints from his side apart from that small remark, so I assume it was enjoyable, especially since he finished the whole plate.

Coming to Welt Cafe without any expectations was definitely a good thing. I enjoyed my visit and there were a few other breakfast options I was undecided about. Which means I will have to return and give them a try, as the first impression of this breakfast spot was undeniably a good one. Yours, Pollybert
