The food of Koufonisia village – what I ate and where

After Naxos Koufonisia was of course an island with a lot less choice on where to eat. But this wasn’t necessarily a disadvantage. Koufinisia might be small, but it has some enough restaurants to keep you exploring. Or you might find your favorite one on your first evening and come back for more from here on after. This didn’t happen to me though, but let’s start from the top. Yours, Pollybert

ΣΤΟΥ ΛΩΛΟΥ/STOU LOLOU: I spent my night on Koufonisa in a small tapas bar with live music, enticed from the good reviews on google. In this case unfortunately it didn’t mean much, as the food was a disappointment. It was the small plates which drew me here, giving me a chance to try a little bit more. I ordered zucchini patties, red beet salad, and fried potatoes and except for the salad everything was uninteresting. The fried potatoes were French fries, the patties mushy and bland, but the red beet salad actually quite tasty there were small pieces of almond inside.

The music was loud and kind of fun and in a group I might have started to dance. But on my own I found it just okay to still concentrate on my book. This is definitely more a place for hanging out with friends and ordering snacks with your drinks, but not a dinner place. This roof top terrace has a great view on the sea and a good overall atmosphere.

Neo Remezzo: Another let down but again with a great view was Neo Remezzo across from the windmill on Koufonisa. I went in search of the sunset before dinner and once in the area I ended up here. That evening I ordered Nisos beer, a local beer to which I was allergic. Not a great start for this evening.

To mix it up I ordered briam, which are oven vegetable including potatoes, zucchini, eggplant, and onion, as well as a portion of mussel saganaki. Bread and a big bottle of water were put on the table without asking. The briam was luke warm but tasted good enough, the saganaki was a not to my liking. To few mussels and the sauce to runny, I definitely had eaten better ones in Greece like this one on Paxos.

Souvlaki Sti Strofi: This is the gyros place in the village with people lining up for it in the evening. Tourists and locals alike enjoy the specialty of the small shop. There’s a window to wait in front and that’s it. A no frills place with fabulous souvlaki and gyros.

Melissa: For my last evening on Koufonisia I decided to head to Melissa, which didn’t have a view but rather lies on the busy main street. Besides a restaurant tthere are also rooms if you want to in this part of the island. I had half a liter of white wine, cooked red beets, which were lightly marinated, oven fried potatoes, and stuffed tomatoes. The filling of the tomatoes was basically only rice, but at least it had a nice mint flavor although it missed a bit of salt. The beets were fantastic as were the potatoes. Finally some great Greek potatoes full of garlic and lemon flavor.
