Cuadro is one of the many restaurarants within the Schlossquadrat. This unique complex offers apartments, workplaces, as well as four restaurants. Cuadro is the only one that serves breakfast. So far I have not been a fan of the restaurants at Schlossquadrat, but on this recent weekend I was in the mood to try something new. The weather was warm and we made the most of the beautiful courtyard. It must also be lovely in summer, as the chestnut tree surely provides some shade.

At nine o’clock the restaurant inside was completely empty, but outside one table was already occupied. Clearly, a reservation for nine in the morning was not necessary. Service was quick and in no time I had a coffee in front of me. I ordered the Cuadro Breakfast combination, which came with a slice of organic bread by Ströck, a Kaiser roll, organic butter, home-made raspberry jam, cream cheese, ham, and a large soft-boiled egg. The egg was not organic, but at least came from free ranging chickens.

The egg was perfectly cooked, the white firm and the yolk still soft. The bread was fresh, squishy in the middle and with a nice crust. The same was true for the Kaiser roll. The only thing I did not enjoy was the ham. It had a bit of a fridge smell, as if it had stayed too long in there. Maybe the smell irritated me, but I only ate a bit. The raspberry jam was good, but I am not sure if it was home-made. It was too smooth and devoid of all seeds. Who cooks raspberry jam like that? Overall though, I was quite happy with my breakfast.
My friend ordered the Spicy Breakfast combination, which came with fried chorizo, a small bowl of chili con carne, Serrano ham, vegetable bean stew, guacamole, a fried egg, and toasted garlic bread.

I do not think the vegetable bean stew ever materialized, and it was clearly not meant as a vegetarian version for the chili, as the rest of the breakfast combination had a lot of meat. The one slice of toasted garlic bread was lovely, the other was neither toasted nor had garlic on it. My friend enjoyed his meal and liked everything. He let me taste the guacamole and ate everything else. The guacamole was not home-made in my opinion, as there was far too much ascorbic acid in it.
I do not know if it was my good mood or if the breakfast here was really that tasty, but overall it was a very pleasant meal. Maybe I should give the other restaurants a chance as well, but we will see about this. If you are in the area though, Cuadro is a nice place for breakfast. Yours, Pollybert
