Strolling through London – around Westminster

After an unsuccessful first attempt to get into Westminster Abbey, I at least managed to see Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament while I was already in the area. Come to think of it, I really should check whether Parliament can be toured. It would be surprising if not. After all, even in Vienna you can visit the halls of democracy.

Interestingly, in front of the Houses of Parliament stands a large statue of Robert the Bruce. Why the Scottish king, who famously challenged King Edward I of England in Scotland’s fight for independence, has such a prominent place here isn’t entirely clear to me. As a long-time Scotland enthusiast, though, I was simply pleased to find it at all.

With Westminster Abbey behind me, I set off toward Buckingham Palace, but once inside St. James’s Park I changed my mind.

I crossed The Mall, finally seeing it in real life without any cars. Unfortunately, there was no procession either, perhaps next time I’ll time that better.

On the north side of The Mall stands the Duke of York Column, commemorating the second son of George III, who served as Commander-in-Chief of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars. He is said to have reorganized the army’s structure and achieved more than any of his predecessors.

Trafalgar Square was lively, with many people sitting around the fountains and enjoying the sunshine on that national holiday. Nelson’s Column rises above it all, as impressive as ever.

A musician was playing nearby, while his grandfather danced along. This was great fun to watch. In the background, St Martin-in-the-Fields stood tall. Beneath it lies the well-known Café in the Crypt, a good option if you’re looking for an affordable meal in the area. It looked very inviting as I headed down the stairs and clearly popular, but it was a bit too early for me to stop. Next time, I’ll have to plan that better. Yours, Pollybert
