Breakfast at Otti – Das Vorstadt Café

Last weekend, I headed out to the suburbs for breakfast at Otti – Das Vorstadt Café. There is good reason why the word “Vorstadt” (suburb) is already part of the name: this café is definitely off the beaten tourist track. It is, however, a huge hit with the locals, as I could easily tell from the warm and personal greetings many guests received upon arrival.

Otti offers both indoor and outdoor seating, and despite the cloudy sky, we decided to sit on the terrace.

Water was brought to the table as soon as we sat down, and our coffees followed shortly thereafter. Service here is quick and attentive.

The breakfast menu is relatively short and does not feature anything overly fancy. In the end, my friend ordered one of the open-faced sandwiches, which are available all day, while I went for the shakshuka.

It looked appealing when it was placed in front of me, although it was clearly an Austrian interpretation of shakshuka. The sauce was a bit too soupy and, after tasting it, somewhat under-seasoned. Nonetheless, it was quite enjoyable. I love tomatoes in all forms, so I did not mind the dominant warm tomato flavour. The eggs were perfectly cooked with beautifully runny yolks. Together with the organic sourdough bread, it made for a lovely breakfast on a warm day.

The sandwiches all sounded delicious, and the one my friend chose turned out to be a big hit. His burrata and tomato sandwich came topped with cream cheese, basil, and pine nuts, accompanied by a boiled egg on the side. The eggs served at Otti – Das Vorstadt Café are organic, which is always worth mentioning.

The combination of creamy burrata, colourful ripe cherry tomatoes, crunchy pine nuts, and fresh basil was a sure winner. The sourdough bread had a pleasant crust and was not too thick, while the toppings were generous. I am not entirely convinced that the boiled egg was necessary, but it is certainly nice to have one in the morning. In any case it is good to know that these sandwiches are served all day.

Otti – Das Vorstadt Café might not offer a long list of breakfast dishes, but what is on the menu is tasty and well executed. Next time I find myself in the area, I will definitely try one of the sandwiches myself. Yours, Pollybert
