What I learned in Karpathos

The week on Karpathos has passed in a flash. It is really amazing how quickly time flies when you are having fun. There was so much to explore, from a Roman cistern and a cave to the many beaches of Karpathos and a mountain village in the north of the island. Karpathos really amazed me with its diverse scenery and all the adventures there are to be had.

Since every island is different from the last one, here is what I learned in Karpathos. Yours, Pollybert

.) Oil and vinegar is put on the table everywhere. That is very different from what we have experienced over the last couple of years in the Cyclades.

.) The beaches on the east side are only accessible via single lane roads going down to each individual beach. The main road goes up in the mountains.

.) Dessert here is often dried fruit in syrup. That is quite different from all other islands, where it is usually fresh fruit or ice cream. I think it was the first time ever that we ate something like this.

.) There is never a lock on the toilet. But in most cases, the stall was so tiny that if you kept your foot at the door, it was basically “locked”.

.) Karpathos is not the island for yachts. I did not see a single one.

.) When you are in a restaurant and notice that is not to your liking, just get up and go. Even if you have already ordered something to drink. Then just finish your drink and leave. Trust the faces of the other diners around you.

.) Staying on the west coast of an island has the advantage of a daily sunset. No matter where we were on Karpathos, we managed to see the sun setting.

.) I love it when there is at least a bit to explore and it is not just a beach vacation. As lazy as I am, I still like the challenge of exploring the area.

.) Even the Greeks make their coffee with an Italian espresso machine. Bialetti is unbeatable for good coffee.

.) Life is just better at the beach. Therefore, Greece is always on my travel list!

.) When Greece is not qualified for the World Cup then no one is interested in the game except tourists. And with the time difference this year they didn’t even care when they closed the restaurant and there was no place to watch the second half.

.) A cat will always find a place to sleep.
