Breakfast at Café Ansari

Going out for breakfast is such a pleasure. I enjoy it now so much more after missing out on this for two months. On a recent Saturday I met for breakfast at Café Ansari, a Georgian restaurant. Breakfast here is supposedly better than any other meal. I can’t say if it is true, but the breakfast was indeed delicious.

Let’s start with the obvious: the café is in a really nice area and the terrace is so agreeable. On this Saturday though the weather was cool and rainy and we headed inside. It only looks so empty inside because it was still pretty early.

There are a couple of interesting breakfast combinations and we got the Georgian and the Russian breakfast respectively. The Georgian breakfast comes with a Khachapuri. This is a yeast pastry, filled with soft cheese and an egg. It comes with a tomato cucumber salad on the side. Expect a 20 minutes wait for this one, although on said Saturday it was served quicker than that. I got a bite to try and loved the cheesy taste. One of these Khachapuris is definitely enough for breakfast. Although it is delicious, it is quite filling.

I went for the Russian breakfast which comes, besides the food, with a shot of vodka. A shot is not really what I want for breakfast and therefore declined it. The price for the combination got therefore reduced. The Russian breakfast had some kind of egg salad with salmon, served in a egg cup, a bowl of beetroot salad, a rolled up liver pâté spread and a sweet pancake filled with curd and walnuts. That’s quite a large breakfast and upon seeing it I understood the reason for the vodka shot.

The savory dishes were excellent and but there was not enough bread to polish it all off. The pancake was a lot less exciting than the other dishes and I would have preferred a smaller version. Overall it was all very tasty and different. I like it when you get breakfast choices that are not so mainstream. Service was good too and quick. Café Ansari will get a place on my list of regular breakfast rotation. Yours, Pollybert
