Breakfast at Café Savoy

The Naschmarkt is a beloved weekend destination for breakfast, but if you’re open to a spot just around the corner, Café Savoy is a fantastic alternative. Due to ongoing construction, there’s currently no thoroughfare on the left side of the market coming from the metro, which is how we found ourselves at Café Savoy that Saturday—much to our delight. This grand coffeehouse has been welcoming guests since 1896, yet in all these years, I had only been there once before, for an evening drink. This visit turned out to be a wonderful rediscovery.

So having a meal at Café Savoy was going to be a first for me, and I was excited to try something new. The day was shaping up to be another hot one, but at that moment, it was still cloudy, making it pleasantly comfortable to sit outside.

The breakfast menu is short and unpretentious, offering a few egg dishes, French toast, and a breakfast bowl. If you’re a fan of scrambled eggs, you’ll find them here with four eggs—a first for me in Vienna, where three eggs are the standard. I decided on the “Oriental Emperor Breakfast,” while my friend ordered the “Savoy Breakfast Burger.”

Service was quick, and my coffee arrived almost immediately, accompanied by the customary glass of water—a very welcome touch, especially in this warm weather.

I’m not quite sure why my dish had the word emperor inside its name, since what I received was simply a standard shakshuka. It arrived at the table piping hot—perhaps not the ideal choice on an already warm day. The eggs had clearly been baked in the sauce in the oven, as they had that slightly elastic texture typical of this cooking method.

I really enjoyed the oriental breakfast, especially the bread roll that came with it. The tomato sauce was well-seasoned, with a pleasant hint of heat in the aftertaste. I was a bit puzzled by the dried herbs sprinkled on top—an Herbes de Provence mix that didn’t quite complement the dish, though it didn’t spoil it either. The eggs were cooked nicely, with runny yolks and mostly firm whites. All in all, it was a lovely breakfast, and I happily wiped the plate clean with the roll.

The Breakfast Burger looked delicious as well. A fried egg, homemade BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese, bacon, lettuce, and a slice of tomato were all tucked into a bread roll. My friend devoured it in one go without a single complaint—surely a sign that it was tasty, since he’s never shy about voicing his dislikes.

Service was very friendly and quick—I love it when my coffee arrives almost instantly. Café Savoy is definitely a place I’d come back to. Yours, Pollybert
