Saturday is always a busy day at the local markets and this day it was no different. I had a reservation for the Wirtschaft am Markt, which so far I only knew from lunch. Their daily changing menus are usually delicious, so I was more than happy to give their breakfast a try. Right around the opening time the restaurant is not really busy. But lots of tables had a reservation marker, clearly a sign of a popular place.
The breakfast menu is small and manageable, with only six combos and a couple of extra items. I ordered the ‘Egg-Meidling’, which is the closest thing to Eggs Benedict. As you know, this is my favorite breakfast dish. At Wirtschaft am Markt one poached egg comes on a slice of toasted dark bread, which is brushed with tomato pesto, topped with an avocado spread, arugula, and sauce Hollandaise.
The sauce is home-made, slight too runny and rather acidic. But it works well with everything else. It’s a good breakfast, despite an overly toasted bread, which was hard to cut. For my taste there was not enough egg on it. What is there, is getting kind of lost with all the green stuff. Besides the arugula the bread had also some sorrel on it, at least by the taste of it. Overall it left me wanting. Not sure what, because I didn’t want more but rather something different.
My friend was not impressed with the available choices and ordered plain ham and eggs. Turns out though, he was quite happy with his dish, which came with a bread basket. Apparently sometimes it’s best to stick with stuff you know.
Coffee is good, with just the right amount of acidity. The service was quick and attentive and checked if you had your Covid related papers. All in all a pleasant enough neighborhood breakfast place, but price-wise it feels as if you are sitting right downtown and not on the outskirts of Vienna. Not sure if I will get out there again just for breakfast. Yours, Pollybert
