Gasthaus Zur Stadt Krems

If you are looking for the real deal when it comes to Viennese cuisine, Gasthaus – Zur Stadt Krems is it. Even though Krems is a city in Lower Austria, the restaurant is right in Vienna. It has this old, shabby look from my youth, but in a good way. Upon entering you basically stand in front of the bar and a couple of tables. Usually the front room is for the regulars, therefore the tables have no dish clothes. The room to the left is more formal and in summer the restaurant has a beautiful inner courtyard as well as a terrace to sit outside.

The typical Viennese food lacks a great choice of vegetarian dishes. So much the better that my vegetarian friend likes fish. She got herself the ‘Matjes nach Hausfrauenart’ (herring with apple sour cream sauce) and a potato salad with mayonnaise on the side. The salad doesn’t usually work with the fish, but her appetite got the better of her after she saw it at some other table. Too bad then that the salad is marinated the Viennese way, with beef stock. I am happy to report that the salad tasted great, just not for vegetarians. She did love her herring though.

We got lucky, because October and November are the perfect time for goose. But most restaurants don’t have that as a regular item on the menu but rather as a pre-order item. So my friend was pleased to be able to order the goose. This tradition goes back to St. Martin and the geese which helped him. Not really sure why we show our appreciation by eating them in large quantities now. But it can be a really tasty meal when well done. And Gasthaus Zur Stadt Krems didn’t disappoint.

A generous leg of good, two potato dumplings, red cabbage, and cranberry sauce are the stars of this dish. It looked perfect and my friend made short work out of it. The goose was gone in a flash. Just how it should be.

For myself I ordered roasted veal liver, a dish I love but rarely make at home. The liver should only roast for a bit, otherwise it gets tough. It was well executed here and the parsley potatoes are just the right side dish. My only problem was that on this large plate the liver cooled off quickly and I had to eat in a hurry.

I loved the homely atmosphere of Gasthaus Zur Stadt Krems. This is not a pretentious place but one that convinces with good home-made food. If you want to get to know the real Vienna or just have a good meal, Gasthaus Zur Stadt Krems is the right place for you. Yours, Pollybert
