El Burro

El Burro is a Mexican restaurant with a small terrace not far from the TU Wien. At first glance it has something of students’ place with its self-service and minimalist approach. We ended up here, because the taco place I originally wanted to go, was fully booked. How I hate it that without a reservation you can’t go anywhere anymore in Vienna.

The advantage of a reservation with El Burro was the service though. Instead of having to line up to order at the bar, the waiter was kind enough to come to our table. Or maybe it was just because we were the oldest in the restaurant? Whatever the reason, I was already happy. With a large beer in hand, at El Burro it comes from a small craft brewery called Brew Age, the evening could start.

Since we had planned on eating tacos, I didn’t even look at the available burritos and quesadillas. For the tacos El Burro offers six different types of toppings, three kinds of meat, two vegetable options, and one seafood. The octopus ceviche was basically finished for the day as there was just enough for one portion. Since all three of us wanted to order it, we got the rest as a starter. The octopus was tasty and had a soft texture, but I disliked the corn that came with it. It was rather hard and there was way too much of it.

With the seafood gone I ordered all three available meats, chipotle beef, pulled pork, and peanut butter chicken. To be honest with the other extras on top, I couldn’t tell the difference between the beef and the pork. Both were delicious, juicy and tender. There was too much of the chicken though to be enjoyable. My biggest problem was that once I had eaten the first one, the other two tacos had gone soft because of the toppings and there was no more crunch.

Also going for tacos is definitely not a date night food, except if you want to find out if you can stomach watching your date eat in a really messy kind of way. I was glad that I spent the evening with friends. All of us ordered tacos and despite different fillings, due to the toppings they all looked the same. I heard that the planted kimchi version, some kind of grilled seasonal plant based stuff, was really tasty. But kimchi always works and showed its magic here as well.

For a quick meal El Burro is not a bad choice, especially in summer. You probably need to get your own food, but price wise it is fine. I am stressing the summer option, because with the indoor seating you are gifted with the kitchen odor that you cannot shake. I also mentioned quick, because El Burro is not a place that invites to linger. Yours, Pollybert
