That Café Ritter lies along the Mariahilfer Strasse, the longest shopping street of Vienna, is one of the main draws of this coffeehouse. It has passed the test of time since 1887, when it moved from another corner in the 6th district. Serving coffee since 1867 means that Café Ritter knows what’s important, a relaxed and quiet atmosphere and a good cup of coffee.

On that Saturday morning it was still a bit nippy, so we sat down inside and ordered breakfast. At least I did, while my friend was more in the mood for something sweet.

A Milchrahmstrudel mit Vanillesauce it the quintessential Viennese pastry. Not something I would typically order for breakfast, but to each his own. It’s quite filling, so this is not a dish you would eat as dessert, but rather in the afternoon with a cup of coffee. My friend was happy with his choice and polished it off in no time. It certainly looked delectable. Unfortunately I can’t say anything to its taste, as I was not in the mood to try something sweet and anyway, nothing was offered. I guess it must have been tasty.

The breakfast menu at Café Ritter offers typical Viennese fare. So if you are looking for something fancy like eggs Benedict, then you are in the wrong place. I ordered two soft boiled eggs, peeled, and served in a glass with buttered bread with chive on the side.

As far as Viennese breakfast go, this one is my favorite. Simple, but so delicious when executed perfectly. The eggs were great at Café Ritter, the white completely boiled and the yolk still runny. Just the texture and taste of the bread was not too my liking. It just didn’t work for me here. Maybe I am just a spoiled brat and only like the Altwiener Hausbrot from Joseph best. On the other hand I deserve to enjoy my food. And the bread at Café Ritter was just too sweet. It didn’t work with the eggs and I only ate one slice.
Overall though I loved the atmosphere at Café Ritter and service was quick and attentive. Along the bustling Mariahilfer Strasse it is nice to know that there is a quiet haven to get a away from all the noise. Yours, Pollybert
