Breakfast at Das Vivet – Coffee Eatery Bar – update

It had been a while since I last visited Das Vivet, so when I made the reservation I didn’t recognize the name at first. But then I remembered the red sauce Hollandaise and it all came back to me. Das Vivet is still an immensely popular neighborhood restaurant. Specializing in all day breakfast it has certainly found its niche. When we arrived at 9am the restaurant was packed to the rafters, on the terrace and inside. When we left around 10am the crowd had dispersed.

Our table was unfortunately waiting for us inside, clearly you need to indicate that you want to sit outside upon making your reservation. Furthermore, and this was a first for me, reservations at Das Vivet are only good for 90 minutes. So this is not a place where you want to meet your friends and linger over drinks long after the last dregs of coffee. The seating inside is also quite tight. no only do have have to squeeze in to get to your seat, the next table is right there. So not a lot of privacy.

Coffee arrived quickly and was tasty. The extended coffee, the Americano basically, was a bit too extended and lacked all crema.

My friend clearly didn”t remember our last visit to Das Vivet, because he ordered eggs Beendict with bacon. The menu had clearly changed as the standard eggs Benedict come with spinach and you can choose between avocado, bacon, turkey breast, salmon, and so on. The eggs arrived on a slice on bread which was topped generously with spinach leaves and bacon, and had a glaze of regular sauce Hollandaise with chive and edible flower sprinkles.

The flower bits through me a little, because in no way do the belong on eggs Benedict. But okay. My friend found only the bread at fault. It wasn’t toasted and soon completely mushy. I am not really sure by what exactly, but my guess is on the egg water. I haven’t tasted the sauce, so my verdict comes from what I see. And this sauce Hollandaise appears derived from a package. It doesn’t look home-made. My friend liked his breakfast though, so let’s say it was all good.

I am not sure what made me do it, but I ordered a beef pancake. A beef patty on top of a pancake with melted cheese, guacamole, bacon, a fried egg, and maple syrup. Of course this can be pimped with a second patty and all kinds of extras. But I went for the regular version.

The pancake was fluffy and quite high, this is definitely the American version of it. I don’t remember if I have seen that anywhere so far. On the other hand I never order pancake. Also, I am not sure, if that doesn’t come out of a premix package as well. But whatever. The pancake was soaked in maple syrup and my first bite of patty and pancake was weird to say the least. Once you get used to it, it’s not such a bad combination. I just wouldn’t order it again, because this is not worth the extra calories. Besides the dried flower sprinkles on this plate as well, the beef pancake was interesting.

I am not really sure how I feel about Das Vivet. While the tight seating was clearly off-putting, other customers clearly like it. Otherwise the place wouldn’t be so full. Also I am not convinced of the kitchen. A lot seems ready-made or coming out of a package mix, something I abhor when eating out. Or maybe it was just the weird flower sprinkles which had a negative effect on me. There was nothing distinctly wrong with anything, on the whole it all seems fake though. In any case, Das Vivet is not the right place for me. Yours, Pollybert
