Breakfast at Meierei Diglas im Türkenschanzpark

Summer in Vienna is best enjoyed outdoors, and what could be more pleasant than starting the day with breakfast in a park? Meierei Diglas im Türkenschanzpark certainly has an advantage over many other breakfast spots, as it is located in one of the city’s most beautiful parks.

The outdoor seating area is surrounded by trees, although most of the shade on the terrace comes from the many large sun umbrellas.

At 9 a.m. a reservation is not necessary, but Meierei Diglas fills up quickly, especially on weekends. There are not many other breakfast options in the immediate vicinity, so it is no surprise that this is such a popular place.

Our waiter arrived promptly and brought our coffee in no time. The Verlängerte, the Austrian version of an Americano, looked rather too watered down and unfortunately tasted that way too. I prefer mine with a bit more body and at least some crema left on top.

My friend ordered the “Fit im Park” breakfast, which comes with a soft boiled egg, rye bread with cream cheese and chives, and a bowl of Greek yogurt with granola and fresh fruit. It sounded like a healthy choice and he was quite happy with it. The egg, which arrived a couple of seconds later, was slightly overcooked, but the bread was nicely toasted and everything tasted fresh. Personally, if I order yogurt with granola, I expect a bit more than just a light sprinkling on top.

I, on the other hand, decided on the Fräulein Benedict, because who does not enjoy a substantial breakfast when the only plan for the rest of the day is relaxing on the couch? It was also a pleasantly cool morning, so a hearty meal felt like the right choice.

In hindsight, I probably should have gone for something lighter. The Fräulein Benedict was not really to my liking. The poached eggs themselves were excellent, perfectly cooked with beautifully runny yolks. The Hollandaise, however, was disappointing. It tasted very much like a ready made sauce that had been dressed up with a splash of vinegar and a few herbs. To be fair, the added acidity made it more enjoyable, but it was still far from a proper homemade Hollandaise.

The sourdough bread underneath was not toasted either, which did not help the overall dish. I wish more places took Eggs Benedict seriously. It is just not enough to poach some eggs and then pour sauce Hollandaise over it.

Overall, Meierei Diglas im Türkenschanzpark is a wonderful place to spend a summer morning. The beautiful setting easily makes up for the rather average breakfast. If you are not overly particular about the food, you will likely leave happy simply because of the atmosphere. Yours, Pollybert
