Breakfast at Café Bräunerhof

Café Bräunerhof is one of Vienna’s most traditional coffeehouses, yet it has somehow been mostly overlooked by tourists. Probably because, in the past, visitors were not always made to feel particularly welcome here. I have to admit, I never minded that. As a typical Viennese, I appreciate being able to enjoy a coffeehouse without hordes of tourists around me. Especially nowadays, when getting a table in the city at regular hours can be difficult without a reservation.

However, Café Bräunerhof has recently come under new ownership, and many things have changed. First of all, the coffeehouse now accepts cards, which is definitely an improvement. On top of that, it has been renovated without losing its traditional charm and feel.

The terrace outside has received a particularly nice upgrade. It now offers very comfortable seating, with wonderfully soft cushions and large umbrellas providing shade and protection from the weather. Come rain or shine, it is a lovely place to sit and enjoy yourself.

The service was another pleasant surprise. It was impeccable and genuinely friendly, which, let’s be honest, is acutally kind of weird in Vienna. I happily enjoyed it though while it lasted. My Verlängerter, the Austrian version of an Americano, arrived exactly the way I wish it would everywhere but almost never does: as an espresso with a small pot of hot water on the side, allowing me to dilute it to my own preference.

It was a warm morning and, as is typical for many Viennese coffeehouses, the breakfast menu is rather limited. There are a few breakfast combinations available, although I am not sure who wants a glass of sparkling wine at 9am. In the end, I chose the classic option. Two soft boiled eggs served in a glass, accompanied by a slice of buttered bread generously topped with chive. This simple breakfast is the essence of Viennese coffeehouse culture. When done well, it is absolutely wonderful, and Café Bräunerhof got it exactly right.

The eggs were perfectly cooked, with a beautifully runny yolk and firm egg whites. They had been peeled carefully and placed in a wide glass with a sprinkle of chives on top. Next to them came a large slice of buttered bread, already cut into manageable pieces, making it easy to eat. The bread was not toasted, but it was fresh, soft and of good quality. There was hardly any crust, but the generous amount of butter and the fresh chives made it a delightful accompaniment. I loved my breakfast. It was exactly how I want to eat in a Viennese coffeehouse.

My friend ordered ham and eggs, which also came with two eggs, and chive bread on the side. The eggs were nicely cooked, still slightly wobbly on top, but he seemed to like that. I dislike a runny egg white on the other hand. There was enough ham to make the dish satisfying, and overall he was very happy with his choice.

I am more than pleased with the changes at Café Bräunerhof. A traditional coffeehouse in the city centre, comfortable outdoor seating, friendly service and no overwhelming crowds are a combination I truly appreciate. Café Bräunerhof now hits all the right notes, and I am already looking forward to my next visit. Yours, Pollybert
