Breakfast at Café Friedlich

Arriving at the Museum Hundertwasser and its in house Café Friedlich, I was surprised to see a long line of people waiting outside. Since both the museum and the café only open at 10 am, I wasn’t sure whether everyone was queuing for the exhibition or for breakfast. It quickly became clear that most of them were there for Café Friedlich.

As soon as the doors opened, almost everyone headed straight for the café and the beautiful courtyard beyond.

Despite the courtyard filling up almost immediately, the service was efficient and our coffee arrived in no time.

My friend ordered the Eggs Benedict, which come with cream cheese and spinach as standard. You can then choose to add ham, bacon, or smoked salmon. He went with the bacon, and there was certainly no shortage of it. The homemade Hollandaise, served from a cream whipper, had a wonderfully light and airy texture. The poached eggs were cooked perfectly and the spinach was still fresh. The sourdough bread from Öfferl was left untoasted unfortunately. Usually I prefer toasted bread with Eggs Benedict, but in this case it wasn’t necessary because the bread had such a wonderful crust. Overall, the Benny eggs from Café Friedlich were a winner.

I, on the other hand, was in the mood for something a little lighter and ordered the ‘I Love Avo‘. Two slices of ancient grain bread were topped with smashed avocado, marinated bitter leaves, and lemon zest oil. I added a perfectly poached egg because otherwise the dish would have been a little too simple for my taste. The creamy avocado was fresh and well seasoned, so much so that even the egg needed no extra salt. The hearty bread added plenty of texture and made the whole dish feel substantial without being heavy. My only small complaint was the greasy fingerprints left on the plate, which slightly spoiled an otherwise beautifully presented meal.

Interestingly, Café Friedlich seemed to attract mostly tourists. I didn’t spot any Viennese diners around us, which may also explain why the prices felt high, even by Vienna standards. That said, the quality of both the food and the ingredients justified the cost, and I would happily return. The only thing I would change is the garden furniture. I honestly can’t remember the last time I sat on such uncomfortable chairs. Then again, perhaps that’s intentional. With seating like that, no one is tempted to linger for too long. Yours, Pollybert
