Breakfast at Figar 1040 – permanently closed

My first visit to a Figar was already ages ago. Meanwhile Figar is well-known figure in Vienna and has four different places. I met with a friend on a recent Sunday for breakfast at the restaurant in the 4th district. The concept is the same, breakfast until late in the afternoon, good quality ingredients, relaxed atmosphere. And still it has changed in the last couple of years.

I made a reservation the day before which was clever. The place was full when I arrived. We ordered our coffee right away but then got pestered every two minutes until we had ordered something to eat. I found that really annoying the third time it happened. Especially since we were seated quite in front of the bar and the staff could clearly see we still had the menu open.

Eventually we got porridge and Eggs Benedict. My friend clearly loved her porridge since she ate it with gusto. Also she ordered it without consulting the menu. Which means to me she knows the place.

The eggs are a different matter. First of all, although called Eggs Benedict, it is only one egg. The menu states that it comes with bacon, fresh spinach and grilled tomatoes on a slice of bread with sauce Hollandaise. And this is what I got.

This is more like an open faced bacon sandwich. I love the taste of the egg with sauce. Here it was not possible since the sauce was all over the place. Also no grilled tomatoes but fresh ones with no taste. The bacon was crispy though but it’s not what you expect with eggs Benedict. That was a rather unfortunate choice.

In case you love avocado, the obligatory avocado toast is also available as well as an extensive breakfast menu with other choices.

The sweets are nowadays not home-made anymore, but come from a French patisserie. The brownie was good and reconciled me with the restaurant.

Overall I think I like the other one better, I remember the other places as brighter. I might need to go and see what Figar 1070 is now up to. Yours, Pollybert
