I only recently rediscovered the Café Engländer with a dinner. And since then it’s back on my horizon. So when another breakfast option literally came to nothing due to a long line-up, I decided to give the breakfast at Café Engländer a try.
The breakfast combinations are limited to four options, which are the usual suspects of Viennese, English, healthy and with smoked salmon. Not really creative but on the other hand why ever for. You don’t go the a typical Viennese coffeehouse for fancy breakfast choices. Here you want to have good coffee and the things you know. Which was in my case two soft boiled eggs, served in a glass, and a slice of bread, slathered with butter and chives. There is nothing more Viennese than this breakfast. Which I love because you can’t really go wrong with it. Usually.
There was nothing wrong with it, but also it wasn’t very exciting. The bread was bland, like your standard supermarket loaf. Which is kind of exceptional nowadays with so many extraordinary bakeries in Vienna. On the other hand, this is exactly what you expect at a coffeehouse in Vienna. Very straight forward the whole thing. The eggs must have been precooked and held warm in some kind of warm water because they were lukewarm at best. At least the coffee was tasty and served real quick.
My friend fared better with the English breakfast. And it did look appetizing especially compared to the one he had at Ferrari Caffè. The small sausages and the little bowl of baked beans actually enticed me as well but I stuck to my healthier choice.
Overall it was a good experience. There are no surprises, neither good nor bad. Just a regular breakfast you expect from a good Viennese coffeehouse. Yours, Pollybert
